What is it with people trying to make punk mainstream?

Why are all these cooperation trying to make punk mainstream now. There calling bands like good Charlotte and my chemical romance and fallout boy punk. Since when is punk a fashion style what happened to going to thrift stores or flee markets and buying and customize clothes to look different and unquie. What happened to underground bands and indie labels, Now all I see are kids going to hot topic and buying clothes and calling them sleves punk. What happend to not caring about what people said and playing for music not for cash. These new bands don't even sound punk they don't even sound rock they sound like boy bands. Anyone know what happend and anyone else miss the old seen.
