How to get a hug from a guy you like?

I like this guy and we have one cl with each other but I don't want to just come right out asking for a hug because he knows I like him so I don't want it to be awkward and I'm shy. Is there a way I can subtly hint for a hug or to act like I want one? This cl sometimes makes me sad so if he saw me tearing up would he ask me if I needed one?
